26-year-old plans to name her future daughter after her grandma; after learning about it, her SIL adopts a dog and names her in that exact name

We're not here to hand out medals in the Family Drama Olympics - we'll leave that to the experts on group chats and holiday dinners. But dogs? Dogs we understand. Dogs are pure, goofy, emotional-support potatoes who just want treats, naps, and whoever's willing to throw the squeaky toy for the fiftieth time. They are blissfully unaware of baby name lists, family heirloom traditions, or which sibling said what to whom in 2019. They just show up with love. Simple. Clean. Drama-free.

Which is why it always feels a bit… icky when a doggo ends up caught in the grey zone of a petty family feud. We're obviously thrilled for every dog who gets adopted - there is no scenario where "new dog gets loving home" isn't a net win for the universe. But it's harder to feel unfiltered joy when the adoption seems engineered not out of love but out of rivalry. No dog deserves to be weaponized in a family feud. Naming your pet should be a moment of excitement and bonding - not a tactical move in a fight with other family members. Dogs are not pawns, even if they do knock over the actual chess pieces.

And honestly? The whole thing just reeks of bad faith. Maybe some selective memory, maybe some strategic denial - who knows. But at the end of the day, our hope is simple: that the dog is adored, cherished, and treated with the unconditional affection they give so freely. Even if their human might need a little help learning the difference between "pet name" and "petty move".

    poofypanda_ I mean.. I would be weirded out by that tbh. If it's a name that I would want for my future kid and my sil named her dog after said name I would be upset to can't lie.

    She learns about what name you both have picked for your kid. Within a week, she has a dog and decides to name her what you picked. Then she tells you that she does not remember ever hearing that name before. It's hard to believe she forgot what her brother wanted to name the kid within a week.

    JHsquared I wouldn't be stoked about it but it's not like she stole the name for her own kid. Even then, if the name is important to you then it's fine for two people (or in this case, a person and a dog) to simply have the same name.

    Also since you mentioned you won't be expecting anytime soon, not only is it a bit unreasonable but also could very well turn out to be irrelevant. Depending on the dog breed/size/current age, by the time you do have a daughter (keep in mind it's possible that you may have one, two, three+ sons before ever having a daughter, if you do) the dog could honestly pass on by that point anyway.
